GEOLOGY AND BIOLOGY
Bio: RT Hawke is been a naturalist for 35 years. After receiving his degree in Natural History from UC Santa Cruz, he moved to Wrightwood and has been studying the birds, plants and rocks here ever since. He has lead bird trips for Audubon, plant trips for California Native Plant Society and Geology trips for naturalists of L.A. County Outdoor School. He finds the geology here in the Wrightwood area very intriguing with all its different rock types and landform features. Because of this, the San Gabriel Mountains may be one of the best places anywhere to learn about different aspects of geology.
Botany class #1. Camp Wrightwood
This will be a beginning botany class, journaling the morphology of the different plants as a means to understand their relationship with each other. The terminology gained from this, will help you identify any plant in the future.
Thursday October 22, 9-11
Maximum 7 people, minimum 4- Bring lawn chair (no hiking) and mask, notebook, and a hand lens if you have one.
Geology class #1 Camp Wrightwood and Mt. Top
Subjects to be covered are rock types and minerals, plate tectonics, faults, alluvial fans, and stream capture.
We will begin at Camp Wrightwood looking at the Pelona Schist and discussing its place in the geologic puzzle. We will then drive to Mt. Top and take a moderate hike on an incised alluvial fan to look at stream capture and thrust faults with abandoned stream channels.
Saturday October 24. 9-12
Maximum 7 people, minimum 4 - take all Covid-19 precautions and hiking preparations

Throughout the year Camp Wrightwood welcomes retreats from many faiths (such as Methodist, Baptist, community churches, Hindu), recovery groups, family retreats…Quite simply, if you are looking for a peaceful place to retreat and reconnect, you are welcome here.
